Dr. Veenstra received his PharmD and PhD from University of California, San Francisco and conducted his postdoctoral training in health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) with the University of Washington (UW), including a one-year externship with Roche Global Pharmacoeconomics. He is a professor and associate director of the UW Comparative Health Outcomes, Policy and Economics (CHOICE) Institute in Seattle, WA.

Dr. Veenstra’s expertise is focused on health-technology assessment and outcomes research. His extensive work with organizations such as the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) and the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) has furthered the practical application of cost‑effectiveness analysis in managed care decision making.

Dr. Veenstra’s academic research investigates the clinical, economic, and policy implications of precision medicine. His major projects include evaluation of the cost effectiveness of genomic testing, decision-modeling techniques to assess evidence thresholds, and stakeholder preferences for precision medicine. His research has been funded through grants from the National Human Genome Research Institute, Centers for Disease Control, and the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Veenstra teaches courses in pharmacoeconomics and managed care and is an author or co‑author of over 200 peer-reviewed publications.
